Latest Rumors and Facts from "As the Red Sox Turn":

After weeks of negotiations, all signs pointed toward Pedro Martinez ending his Red Sox career by accepting a four-year offer from the Mets once negotiations are complete, which could happen as soon as today.
-- Boston Herald

The Mets outbid the Sox at the last minute by sweetening their offer from a guaranteed three years at $37.5 million with a $12.5 million option to the final four-year package. At that, Martinez left Boston's final offer on the table. He confirmed to several friends last night that he accepted the offer from the Mets.
-- Boston Globe

Martinez is expected to be in New York on Thursday.
-- New York Post

One Red Sox operative noted with a trace of bitterness: "If we had known this, we would've been heavier into (Carl) Pavano."
-- New York Daily News

The Red Sox now have a hole in a starting rotation in which Curt Schilling, David Wells and Tim Wakefield will average roughly 39 years of age next season. The Sox need to get younger as much as they need to get better, and they were not necessarily going to do so by granting Martinez a three-year contract, let alone a four-year deal.
-- Boston Herald

Losing Martinez to the Mets is one thing. But sending Manny Ramirez to Shea Stadium is something the Red Sox have no plans to consider, despite reports that the Mets inquired about trading for the 2004 World Series MVP.
