"Yes, I have been beaten, everywhere on my body. The marks are still there," Saddam told the court after sitting quietly listening to testimony. "And I'm not complaining about the Americans because I can poke their eyes with my own hands."

Earlier, Saddam sat quietly as a witness testified that his regime killed and tortured people by administering electric shocks and ripping off their skin after pouring molten plastic on it.

Blood poured from head wounds and skin was pale from electric shocks, he testified. Security officials would drip melted plastic hoses on detainees, only to pull it off after it cooled, tearing skin off with it, he said.   posted 957am by jholmes

UCLA political study shows that the liberal media bias is a reality that actually exists.

Of the 20 major media outlets studied, 18 scored left of center, with CBS' "Evening News," The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times ranking second, third and fourth most liberal behind the news pages of The Wall Street Journal.

Five news outlets — "NewsHour With Jim Lehrer," ABC's "Good Morning America," CNN's "NewsNight With Aaron Brown," Fox News' "Special Report With Brit Hume" and the Drudge Report — were in a statistical dead heat in the race for the most centrist news outlet.  Of the print media, USA Today was the most centrist.

Another finding that contradicted conventional wisdom was that the Drudge Report was slightly left of center.

"One thing people should keep in mind is that our data for the Drudge Report was based almost entirely on the articles that the Drudge Report lists on other Web sites," said Groseclose.  "Very little was based on the stories that Matt Drudge himself wrote. The fact that the Drudge Report appears left of center is merely a reflection of the overall bias of the media."   posted 2:07am by jholmes

Some Crazier Ones:

  • Limiting the wife's weight to 120 pounds or she must relinquish $100,000 of her separate property.

  • Allowing a spouse to perform random drug tests, with financial penalties for positive results.

  • Requiring a husband to pay $10,000 each time he is rude to his wife's parents.

  • No mother-in-law sleepovers.

  • Only one football game per Sunday.

  • Mandatory sexual positions.

Saddam hoped to emerge unnoticed in nearby bushes — before staging a Steve McQueen-type great escape riding a motorcycle.

But he added: “I believe I was betrayed. I have been set up.”

Spineless French leader Chirac was dubbed “Le Worm” in the run-up to the Iraq war after failing to back allied forces invading Iraq.

Chirac’s cowardice has earned him the eternal gratitude of the Butcher of Baghdad. Saddam boasted from jail: “Chirac has been a longtime friend of mine.”

Bizarrely, his legal team address Saddam as “Mr President” — despite the fact he tortured, gassed and butchered an estimated 300,000 of his own people during a 24-year reign of terror.

I had an official entry for Bumpshack and the history of Bumpshack on Wikipedia Encyclopedia but it looks like it might get deleted by their editors due to 'vanity' according to them.  I guess they really have no clue about the Shack now do they?

Huge Turnout:  There was such a huge voter turnout in Iraq that polling hours were extended to accommodate everyone who was standing in line to vote in the historic free parliament elections.

The heavy participation by the Sunnis, who had shunned balloting last January, bolstered U.S. hopes of calming the insurgency enough to begin withdrawing its troops next year.

Because of the large turnout, the Iraqi election commission extended voting for one hour, as long lines were reported at some sites, said commission official Munthur Abdelamir. Some preliminary returns were expected late Thursday, and the Iraqi election commission said Thursday the results of parliamentary election will be announced within two weeks.

But violence was light overall and did not appear to discourage Iraqis, some of whom turned out wrapped in their country’s flag on a bright, sunny day, and afterward displayed a purple ink-stained index finger — a mark to guard against multiple voting.   posted 8:39am by jholmes

The Broker by John Grisham

John Grisham seems to never slow down or bore.  I simply could not put The Broker down.  It is now in paper back and a great, quick, fun read.  It is Grisham at his best.

The story involves around Joel Backman, a Washington power broker lobbyist, who is serving twenty years in prison, when an outgoing President unexpectedly grants him a full pardon.

The CIA director is the one who campaigned for the pardon of Joel Backman.  He did this so Backman would be killed by any of many countries that are mad at him. The furious countries are mad over a  software program he never delivered to those countries before he went to prison that gave access to the most powerful spy satellite ever created.

The CIA plants Backman in Italy and that is where the story unfolds.  Backman starts to get suspicious as to why he was not given his passport back upon his pardon and why he is being so closely watched.

As always with a John Grisham novel there are many key characters, twists, plots, and excitement that keeps his readers coming back for more each time.   Most of this novel takes place in Italy and gives a nice history lesson for those of us who have been there and others who have dreamed of what it would be like to live in Italy.

Last year, more than 6,000 miners were killed in fires, floods, cave-ins and explosions, making China's shafts the world's deadliest. Corruption, lax safety rules and poor equipment are among factors often blamed for the accidents.   posted 12:54am by jholmes

Violet?  Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have a new favorite color....I mean baby girl.  They are already discussing Neon Carrot, Radical Red, Orange Yellow, Blizzard Blue and every other Crayola Crayon name for any future children that they might procreate.

In completing her labor day, Garner beats her prime-time alter ego to the nursery. Sydney Bristow, the Alias secret agent that made Garner a star, also is with child. Producers of the ABC spy series wrote in the pregnancy after Garner's was confirmed

Alias was canceled last week by ABC. It'll finish its fifth and final season in May, after a previously scheduled eight-week-long maternity leave of sorts starting in January.

Meanwhile, no bad reviews are good reviews for Father Affleck, who will not appear on the big screen in 2005--the first time that's happened since 1994. While it might seem as if romance, marriage and pregnancy has kept the actor otherwise occupied, he might have as many as three films out next year, including Truth, Justice and the American Way, about the 1959 death of TV Superman George Reeves.   posted 12:54am by jholmes

Tom Cruise has now pissed off the American College of Radiology over his purchase of a sonogram machine for his mother-to-be Katie Holmes.  More Cruise Craziness.

The ACR issued a statement warning that Cruise and Holmes could potentially harm their unborn baby by performing ultrasounds without the benefit of a doctor's supervision

"This is a patient safety issue. Untrained people, even if they have the financial means, should not buy, or be allowed to buy and operate, ultrasound machines which are, in fact, medical devices and should not be used without a medical indication," said Dr. Carol M. Rumack, chair of the ACR Ultrasound Commission.

"I bought a sonogram machine," Cruise told Walters during the interview, which was taped Oct. 30. "I am going to donate it to a hospital when we are done."

Somewhat startled, Walters replied, "Wait, you are going to do your own sonogram?"

"Yes," Cruise replied, chuckling.    posted 12:40am by jholmes

Babies with AIDS in Russia are becoming outcasts.

Most children of women with HIV aren't born infected, but they cannot be reliably tested for the virus until they are 15 to 18 months old, and many mothers abandon them in the belief that they and the babies will soon be dead. Other mothers are drug users and cannot take proper care of their children.

Since the Soviet collapse, AIDS has been spreading through Russia at a devastating pace due to weak anti-drug and prevention programs. At first it was driven by drug users' infected needles; now sexual transmission has soared.   posted 12:31am by jholmes

Walk the Line, PG-13

Movie Review by
jholmes

Walk the Line is a great film about the legendary Johnny Cash. The movie is about Cash's early career and the love story that develops between June Carter and himself.  The film starts with Johnny as a young boy and shows early events in his life that helped shaped 'The Man in Black.' Cash is played by Joaquin Phoenix and June by Reese Witherspoon. Both give impressive performances and did all of their own singing for their parts.  The movie is just a brief look into the complex life of Cash and does not include the last 35 years of his life.  Look for several awards to come out of this cinematic release.  For more on Johnny Cash check out his Wikipedia page.  posted 12:10am by jholmes
