Lawmakers respond to bash Tom Cruise for his haphazard and off-the-wall remarks about mental health.  Bumpshack log of the Craziness of Tom Cruise

“It is unfortunate that Tom Cruise has sought to use his celebrity to once again negatively reinforce the unfortunate stigma associated with mental illness,” said Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.), co-chair of the caucus. “Mr. Cruise is correct in saying that some of the drugs used to treat psychiatric disorders can be abused, but these same drugs have been beneficial to countless numbers of people who can now focus on their work in school or on the job.”     posted 1:31pm by jholmes

Historian Shelby Foote has passed away.  The Memphis native and author wrote an epic three volume, 3000 pages entitled "The Civil War: A Narrative" along with six other novels about the era.  He also gained fame for his commentary and expertise on Ken Burns' 1990 documentary 'Civil War.'  Foote was 88 years old.

In 1999, the Modern Library ranked Foote's "The Civil War: A Narrative" as No. 15 on its list of the century's 100 best English-language works of nonfiction.

Early in his career, Foote took up the habit of writing by hand with an old-fashioned dipped pen, and he continued that practice throughout his life. Foote said writing by hand helped him slow down to a manageable pace and was more personal than using a typewriter.  posted 12:17am by jholmes

The Mercury News review of 'War of the Worlds':

It turns out, it's not the end of the world. You just wish it were by the end of the movie.

"War of the Worlds" is a picture without a thought in its pretty head: the Tom Cruise movie to end all Tom Cruise movies. If we're lucky. The movie has nothing much to say about the shape the world is in, other than a few reflexive questions about whether the explosions that accompany the arrival of space invaders might actually be caused by "the terrorists."

"War of the Worlds" is supposed to be about aliens who go stomping around the countryside on long-legged fighting platforms -- known instantly to everyone in the movie as Tripods -- that almost certainly are the least practical interplanetary attack vehicles ever devised. But the invaders are only there to provide a backdrop for the movie's seemingly endless tableaux of Tom Cruise -- Tom Cruise running for his life, Tom Cruise being bathed in the blood of others, Tom Cruise yelling at his movie kids like a guy who wishes he knew where to get his hands on some Ritalin."     posted 12:11am by jholmes

Psychiatrists respond to Tom Cruise's bashing yesterday on the 'Today Show.'

He insisted there's no such thing as a chemical imbalance and argued that mood disorders can be cured with "vitamins, exercise and various things."

He didn't say whether one of those things is Scientology, the religion that says humans are plagued by the souls of dead aliens who invaded the planet 75 million years ago.

Cruise's views on psychiatry are so extreme and devoid of scientific proof, "it's a little like talking to somebody who claims the world is flat," Scully said.

Dr. Margaret Spinelli of the New York Psychiatric Institute's maternal mental health program said, "science at every level" has demonstrated that postpartum depression stems from a chemical imbalance that medication can correct in 80% of the cases.     posted 10:27pm by jholmes

O'Shea said when he told him he was not married, Saddam "started telling me what to do." "He was like, `you gotta find a good woman. Not too smart, not too dumb. Not too old, not too young. One that can cook and clean.'"

Then he smiled, made what O'Shea interpreted as a "spanking" gesture, laughed and went back to washing his clothes in the sink.

For a time his favorite food was Cheetos, and when those ran out, Saddam would "get grumpy," the story says. One day the guards substituted Doritos corn chips, and Saddam forgot about Cheetos. "He'd eat a family size bag of Doritos in 10 minutes," Dawson says.
