NASCAR in Nashville   Photos

The Busch Series NASCAR race in Nashville on Saturday was a blast.  A good friend helped set up with an all-access media pass for the Bumpshack.  I arrived at the credentials trailer and picked up my press pass, garage pass, and pit pass for the Pepsi 300.  I had a parking pass in the infield, so that was very convenient.  I proceeded to go to the Media/Press Building.  It was very nice, catered, press releases on all the drivers, stats, computer portals, big screens, and lots of TV and media people.  I ran into Larry McReynolds, the former crew chief of Davey Allison and Dale Earnhardt, who now does the color commentary on Fox.  I then took some bottled waters from the cooler, threw them in my backpack, and headed for the garages.  I walked in and out of many stalls in the garage looking over all the cars.  They were so peaceful, in their stalls all alone, calm before the battle they were soon to engage in.  I took some photos of the cars, the haulers, the gas cans, and the crews, as I walked around the garage area.  I met and talked to Carl Edwards, who won the Nextel Cup race in Atlanta the week before, and got some great shots of him.  He is the next big star in the sport.  I spent some time talking to the race girls, who were booked by the sweet lady who connected with the press pass. All really nice, sweet, sexy people.  The girls had to be at the finish line for driving introductions, so we all hopped in a golf cart (I was in the dump-bed part of it) and we took off around the actual track, in front of the grandstand to the checkered line where the driver introductions and anthem was to be performed.  I got some great photos of the drivers and Jamie O'Neal, who sang the Star Spangled Banner.  I slowly made my way back to the pits where the cars were lined up and ready to roar.  I got some great shots of some of the drivers as they got in their cars. I then watched the race from the pits. I was right there there kneeling in between a break in the pit wall. It is as close as you can get and as close as anyone would want to be to cars going that fast.  It was great fun in the pits, watching the crews work so hard on the cars.  It is such a huge production even on the Busch level.  The race, as far as competition, was not overly exciting.  Reed Sorenson started with the pole and dominated the entire race winning by over 14 seconds.  Carl Edwards ran strong and finished in fourth.  The win was the first ever for Sorenson, who is just 19 years old.  I was able to be in Winner's Circle with Reed and his team as they celebrated the victory.  I had always heard about how the winner of a NASCAR race had to change hats for all the pictures to please his sponsors.  I assumed this was probably six or seven hats.  Reed put on over 55 hats for pictures.  There was a lady who would shape them and form them and then hand them to him.  It was very humorous.  I had a great day, and it was a great experience. I am very appreciative of those who set it up for Bumpshack.com.  It was a historic day in the history of the Bumpshack.  Photos from the Race.  posted 1:49am by jholmes

NCAA Tourney Roundup: Two amazing games and incredible comebacks yesterday.  Louisville was demolished in the first half and down 20 points, but Coach Pitino charged the boys up, and they chipped away at the game, and won it in overtime.  West Virginia, with the big lead, changed their style of play and quit being aggressive and trying to score.  Louisville won in overtime 93-85.  #1 seed Illinois was dead in the water with just over 4 minutes to play last night.  They were down 15 points, but they were not done.  They outscored Arizona 20-5 to send the game to overtime.  Illinois was able to hold off Arizona in overtime and win the game 90-89.  Two of the greatest comebacks in the history of the tournament both on the same day.  posted 8:47am by jholmes

NCAA Tourney Roundup: NC State totally collapsed in the second half by getting out scored by 18 points.  Wisconsin played tough throughout to pull of the win over the Wolfpack,  65-56. I missed that one with my quick picks.  Duke, a #1 seed, was upset by Michigan State by a final score of 78-68.  Paul Davis, of MSU, was tough on the boards and the free throw line down the stretch.  As I sated with my picks earlier, I knew Duke was in trouble if Michigan State scored over 70 points.  Villanova was down right dominating against North Carolina for a half until the Tarheels woke up.  UNC then was in control until the last few minutes when Nova made it close.  A very controversial traveling call went against the Wildcats.  Allan Ray drove to the basket, hit the shot and was fouled, but not before the referee blew his whistle and called Ray for traveling.  UNC won the game 67-66.  I honestly thought that Utah would beat Kentucky or perhaps it was just my wishful thinking.  Player of the Year Andrew Bogut, of Utah, had a tough time all game.  Kentucky used two backup 7-footers who did a good job of fouling and putting the clamps on Bogut.  Kentucky was never challenged and won the game 62-52.  posted 12:23am by jholmes

My NCAA Tourney Quick Picks for Tonight:    posted 2:42pm

NC State (10) v. Wisconsin (6): The winner of this game will probably be playing North Carolina for a chance to go to the Final Four. I will be pulling for the underdog North Carolina State Wolfpack to win, in hopes of setting up a all Carolina match up with the winner going to the Final Four.  Both of these teams have been surprisingly good in the tournament.  NC State finished the regular season strong, and they have ridden that success to the Sweet 16.  The seeding of these teams seems more like a first round game.  Julius Hodge is the do-it-all player for NC State. He is a big time player, and he will have a big time game tonight.  Wisconsin has one of the best defenses in the country and they will use that strength to try to shut down Hodge and the rest of the Wolfpack.  This game will be close but I think State will win this one in the last few minutes.  PICK: NC State

Michigan State (5) v. Duke (1): The Blue Devils are not nearly as strong as they usually are in the tournament.  Duke will need Coach K to orchestrate a way to win in this game.  This game will have  to be an up tempo and  high scoring game for the Spartans to have their best shot of coming away with a W.  Duke is a very shallow team that plays very few players. On the other hand, Michigan State is very deep and very athletic.  Coach K will have Duke trying to slow the game down and keep the score under 60. If Duke can do this they will win. If the score goes into the 70's or 80's then look for MSU to pull the upset.  In the end State is too deep and Duke will wear out.  PICK: Michigan State

Utah (6) v. Kentucky (1):  Kentucky has escaped narrow loses all season long.  The #1 seeding of Duke and Kentucky almost makes you wonder if they are living on reputation alone.  Kentucky has been less than stellar in its last 4 games.  Player of the Year Andrew Bogut is a beast inside for Utah. The 7'0" center from Australia imposes his will on other teams. He led the Utes in scoring, rebounding, and assists this season.  Kentucky is a well balanced team.  They will try to wear down Utah, and then put the game away in the last few minutes.  Look for Bogut to have a big game.  If he does, then Utah will be able to get the victory.  I can see this game becoming a blowout or going back and forth all night long.  PICK: Utah

Villanova (5) v. North Carolina (1):  Is this the year Roy Williams finally wins it all?  I was at the NCAA Championship game last time he got there with Kansas.  Kansas lost that game to Carmelo Anthony and the Syracuse Orangemen in a nail biter.  This Tarheels team might be Roy Williams' best team ever.  They are immensely talented like the 1982 Tarheels that included Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, and James Worthy.  Sean May is the big stud inside for the Tarheel Nation.  He has been tearing through the brackets with his strong play for UNC.  Last weekend he had 20 points and 17 rebounds against Iowa State to get NC to the Sweet 16.  Allan Ray, the leading scorer for Villanova, has struggled in every game of the tournament. For Nova to have any sort of chance Ray has to have a brilliant game. Nova will already be playing without their second leading scorer Curtis Sumpter, who got injured last weekend.  Nova might hang close for a bit, but North Carolina should run away with this game, especially in the second half.  Sean May will dominate.  PICK: North Carolina

NCAA Tourney Roundup: I was 50% on my quick picks getting two out of the four games right.  I am now 36-50 with my picks.  Having the higher seed meant nothing last night with three of the four lower seeds pulling off the upset.

I knew Louisville would be tough to beat if their three point shooters were on, and they were on fire last night. They had a relatively easy time beating Washington. Washington is the first #1 seed to be knocked out of the tournament this year.  Francisco Garcia led the way for the Louisville Cardinals.  Louisville, who dominated most of the game, ended up winning 93-79 over the Huskies.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee  hung with Illinois for the first half.  The guard play for Illinois helped them run away with the game in the second half. Milwaukee was horrendous controlling the ball as they seemed to turn it over time and time again.  I predicted both the Louisville and Illinois wins.  The games were close for most of the first half but dominated by the Cardinals and Illini in the second half.  Illinois won this game 77-63 over the Panthers.

The two late games on the TV last night I knew would be tough games with lead changes, intense coaching, and tight scores.  I missed both of these games, but just by a basket this way or that way.  West Virginia is for sure the Cinderella of the tournament now after beating the Texas Tech Red Raiders 65-60

The last game of the night was the best one of them all. A classic duel between two of the greatest coaches in the history of the game, Eddie Sutton and Lute Olsen.  This was a game of runs in which the last team to make a run was going to win the game.  Oklahoma State was up by a point and Arizona had the ball with 13 seconds to go, Salim Stoudamire had the ball, he shook off a screen, dribbled left and nailed the 16-foot fall away with a guy all in his grill with 2.8 seconds left. I had warned in my prediction that this guy  had to be stopped and he was for most of the game, but he was clutch down the stretch making key bucket after key bucket to keep Arizona in the game, before he nailed the game winner to give Arizona a 79-78 victory over OSU.    posted 8:51am by jholmes

My NCAA Tourney Quick Picks:   posted 3:00pm by jholmes

Washington (1) v. Louisville (4): I know that no one is giving the Huskies the credit they probably deserve, and I guess you can group me with those who are not believes in them.  I think Louisville will win this game.  Louisville is playing with a chip on their shoulders after being disrespected with a horrible seed.  If Louisville comes out and their 3-point shooters are on then the Cardinals will coast.  IF they are off, then look for Washington to run away with this game, in a similar fashion as to the way the Memphis Tigers blew out Louisville when they were frigid during their game back in February.  Look for a very high scoring game between these two schools that love to run the score up. PICK: Louisville

Texas Tech (6) v. West Virginia (7):  Both of these teams have overachieved in the tournament.  I can see this game going either way.  I do believe that Texas Tech, which runs Bobby Knight's offense with precision, will win this one down the stretch.  West Virginia likes to run a Princeton offense which hinges on back cuts and screens.  The lower the score, the better the chance of the Mountaineers winning the game.  West Virginia was also more impressive in their last tournament game, with a huge overtime win over Wake Forrest.  In the end I believe Bobby Knight will have his Red Raiders playing with the fear of God in them, which will result in a close win for the Red Raiders. PICK: Texas Tech

Illinois (1) v. Wisconsin-Milwaukee (12): WM has already upset a #5 and a #4 seed in beating Alabama and Boston College.  This will be an even bigger challenge for the Panthers.  Illinois has been far and away the best team all season, having lost just one game all year.  In their loss, they lead the entire game with the exception of the last 10 seconds. The guard play has to be there for the Fighting Illini to be successful against the Panthers.  If the Panthers can contain Illini point guard Dee Brown and frustrate him with full court pressure and traps then they might have a shot at the big upset.  I would love to see a #12 seed in the Elite Eight and then the Final Four.  I think the odds are very slim, but I will be pulling for the underdog Panthers of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  I believe WM will be able to keep this game close but in the end I think the Fighting Illini will be too much. PICK: Illinois

Oklahoma State (2) v. Arizona (3): Two great head coaches will be going head to head in this game, when Eddie Sutton and Lute Olsen lead their teams into this fierce battle tonight.  Oklahoma State, to have a chance, will have to find a way to limit the number of shots that Salim Stoudamire takes.  He scored 28 points in the Wildcats last game against UAB.  On the flipside, Arizona will have to find a way to slow down the Cowboys Ivan Marlin, who scored a tourney high 31 points over Southern Illinois in the last round. This will be a close game with the lead going back and forth all game. Both teams are very athletic and it should be a high scoring, exciting game to watch.  I see the Cowboys of Oklahoma State winning this one on a last second shot.  This will probably be the most exciting game of the night along with the Louisville-Washington game.  The key is stopping the stars in this one. PICK: Oklahoma State

Update on Clemens' Hummer: It has been found.  posted 9:41pm by jholmes

Some of you have asked, so here are my thoughts on the Terri Schiavo crisis.  So instead of constantly typing them out I thought I would post them on here. I mean that is what Bumpshack.com is for right? So here they are:  It is not a federal issue, it shouldn't be in the federal courts. There are thousands of these cases, and it is clearly and always has been a states rights issue. I also believe it is the husbands decision as to what should be done with his wife. That is the law is in most states and even Florida unless I am mistaken.  If there is a life or death decision the husband makes it. She has not improved in 15 years and her health care is costing millions of dollars.  As parents, most people are blinded by their love for their child. Every parent would want to keep their child alive. However, parents do not  always realize in actuality what is best for their child because of their abiding love and natural super attachment to those they have bore and raised.  I would not want to be kept in the condition that she is in and most of us would not.  I do not think her husband is a good guy from what I have read, but that is no reason to change the law.  It is a state issue and should have been kept in the state of Florida.  It is a very sad and tragic case. I can totally feel and sympathize with her parents. I would love nothing more than a miracle from God to make her get up and walk out of the hospice tomorrow.  My prayers are with all involved on both sides.  posted 4:43pm by jholmes

An Iraqi's blog on Iraq and his thoughts on if the past two years have been worth it to his people:

Now I answer you, I answer you on behalf of myself, and my countrymen. I dont care what your news tells you, what your television and newspapers say, this is how we feel. Despite all that has happened. Despite all the hurt, the pain, blood, sweat and tears. These two years have given us hope we never had.

Iraqis see the finish line, the finish line of freedom and democracy and a functioning nation. We can smell it, taste it, and like a sprinter, one who has broken his legs, but who has a heart full of passion, we will crawl there no matter what the cost. No matter what we must endure, we have realized what we can become, and that is the biggest result of the last two years.

We have been brought from darkness to light. And not only has the future been made better for Iraq, but the martyrs of our nation, their blood is watering the roots of democracy across the world. We are watching our neighbors come closer to the light, and this only pushes us more, and makes us stronger in our burning desire to reach the finish line, to realize the dream that our people have had for so long.    posted 1:45am by jholmes

NC State is also playing very good basketball.  So from 64 teams we are now down to the Sweet 16.  Which ever team amongst those 16 can win 4 games in a row will be National Champions.  Any team that wins their next 2 games will be in the Final Four.  I like Illinois, Louisville, North Carolina, and Utah to upset Duke to make the Final Four.  posted 12:22am by jholmes

"Women of this type are good mothers, faithful wives and caring daughters. I don't think I'm wrong when I say that precisely this type of woman helped Japan become the glorious country it is."

On the other hand, women most likely to be unfaithful had pubic hair resembling the "mouth of a river".

We don't train four years for, like, a 10-second (event). We go 162 games. You've got to come back day after day after day. We're entertainers. If I can't go out there and somebody pays $60 for a ticket, and I'm not in the lineup, who's getting cheated? Not me. There are far worse things like cocaine, heroin and those types of things.

"You want to define cheating in America? When they make a shirt in Korea for a $1.50 and sell it here for 500 bucks? And you ask me what cheating means? I'll tell you how I cheat. I cheat because I'm my daddy's son. He taught me the game. He taught me things nobody else knows. So that's how I cheat. I'm my daddy's son."

"They say it makes your testicles shrink,'' he said. "I can tell you my testicles are the same size. They haven't shrunk. They're the same and work just the same as they always have."

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright once wrote that a home should not simply be plopped on a hill: "It should be of the hill, belonging to it, so hill and house could live together each the happier for the other."
