President Bush will give a major speech Wednesday night at the Naval Academy that should outline the beginning of troop removal from Iraq.

In a departure from previous statements, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said this week that the training of Iraqi soldiers had advanced so far that the current number of U.S. troops in the country probably would not be needed much longer.

It also follows agreement this week among Iraqi politicians that the U.S. troop presence ought to decrease. Meeting in Cairo, representatives of the three major ethnic and religious groups called for a U.S. withdrawal and recognized Iraqis' "legitimate right of resistance" to foreign occupation. In private conversations, Iraqi officials discussed a possible two-year withdrawal period, analysts said.   posted 12:46am by jholmes

An arbitrator has ruled against Terrell Owens and in favor of the Eagles.  Owens' suspension by the Eagles for the remaining part of the season will be upheld.

Arbitrator Richard Bloch wrote in a 38-page decision that the Eagles clearly proved that the suspension was justified, and were within their right to pay their All-Pro receiver but not allow him to return "due to the nature of his conduct and its destructive and continuing threat to the team."

"We are pleased that the arbitrator has upheld the right of a club to suspend a player for conduct detrimental to the club," said Harold Henderson, the NFL's head of labor relations. "The ruling makes clear that Terrell Owens and his agent engaged in conduct that was disruptive to the Eagles and that coach Reid's decision to suspend the player was appropriate."   posted 11:20am by jholmes

Match.com is being sued in a purported date scam in which they were hiring men and women to go out on dates with their customers.

A Los Angeles racketeering lawsuit said the lonely hearts website secretly recruited people to send enticing emails to its customers and to go out on dates with them as a way of getting them to keep up their 30 dollars monthly subscription.

The company's ringers, branded "date bait", went on as many as 100 dates a month -- three per day -- with Match.com customers, who use the site to search for boyfriends, girlfriends, and possible husbands and wives.

Kristin Kelly, a spokesperson for Match.com -- which has an estimated one million paid subscribers and 15 million members -- denied the charges, saying the lawsuit is "completely without merit" and would be "vigorously" challenged.   posted 12:27pm by jholmes

Bill Clinton blasted the attack on Iraq as being a 'big mistake' to a group of Arab students this week, but this CNN story from 1998 quotes Clinton as saying:

"Saddam (Hussein) must not be allowed to threaten his neighbors or the world with nuclear arms, poison gas or biological weapons," Clinton said.

Earlier today I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces," Clinton said.

"Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors," said Clinton.

Clinton also stated that, while other countries also had weapons of mass destruction, Hussein is in a different category because he has used such weapons against his own people and against his neighbors.

"Along with Prime Minister (Tony) Blair of Great Britain, I made it equally clear that if Saddam failed to cooperate fully we would be prepared to act without delay, diplomacy or warning," Clinton said.

"If Saddam can cripple the weapons inspections system and get away with it, he would conclude the international community, led by the United States, has simply lost its will," said Clinton. "He would surmise that he has free rein to rebuild his arsenal of destruction."

"The best way to end that threat once and for all is with a new Iraqi government -- a government ready to live in peace with its neighbors, a government that respects the rights of its people," Clinton said.

Saw II      Movie Review by original Bumpshacker EBrown

I was excited about this movie and even re-watched the first one the night before going to see this one.  Overall, I can’t say it was a terrible movie but it is definitely worse than the first one.  Saw 1 reminded me of some old Alfred Hitchcock films.  They could scare the heck out of you without all the blood and gore.  Saw 1 did a fine job at doing that.  The sequel did not quite live up to the hype.  Although some of the “killing” scenes are quite clever, it revolves around just a series of slashing killings that make it seem more like Friday 13th instead of a psychological thriller.  The writing did not develop hardly any of the characters and the ending did just not have the “awe” factor that Saw 1 had.  It did leave you tensed up the entire movie which is always a good thing if you are into that.  I give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.  You might just want to wait for the DVD for this one.  posted 12:59pm by jholmes

President Bush is lashing out at his critics for trying to rewrite history.

"The stakes in the global war on terror are too high and the national interest is too important for politicians to throw out false charges," the president said in his combative Veterans Day speech.

"Some Democrats and anti-war critics are now claiming we manipulated the intelligence and mislead the American people about why we went to war," Bush said.

He said those critics have made those allegations although they know that a Senate investigation "found no evidence" of political pressure to change the intelligence community's assessments related to Saddam's weapons program.

He said they also know that the United Nations passed more than a dozen resolutions citing Saddam's development and possession of weapons of mass destruction.

"More than 100 Democrats in the House and the Senate who had access to the same intelligence voted to support removing Saddam Hussein from power," Bush said.

"We will never back down. We will never give in. We will never accept anything less than complete victory," he said Friday.   posted 9:58am by jholmes

Reports are claiming that Britney Spears and Kevin Federline Spears have split.

Over the phone, Kevin allegedly told his wife he was too busy working on his new music to collect her and their son from the airport when she was ready to return some six days later.

The couple eventually came to an uneasy truce and Britney and the baby returned to California after a week away. But now, say sources, the arguing has put a terrible strain on the marriage — and they could be heading for a more permanent split. Britney is said to fear Kevin is reverting to the behavior that led him to leave his girlfriend Shar Jackson when she was pregnant with their second child.   posted 12:45am by jholmes

A number of Democrats have called for windfall profits taxes on the industry. Other senators, including Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., have said it may be time to enact a federal law on price gouging.   posted 12:39am by jholmes
